Help Support and Empower Women in Need

Dress for Success Los Angeles

Needs Your Help!!







GOAL: Raise $20,000 by June 15, 2004





REASON: DFSLA has sustained a “double whammy” from the economy - not only is charitable giving down nation-wide, but local unemployment and layoffs bring more people to our doors in need of our services!





WHAT WE NEED: We need you to host a get-together at your home or some other location and supply snacks/refreshments in line with your chosen theme. Asks guests to come spend an evening/afternoon with friends and bring $10-15 each to support DFSLA - you set the amount. Then, have fun with your family/friends! That’s it! Our hope is that each social could raise at least $200, but any amount is appreciated.





Each individual will receive a tax-deductible receipt. Their name will appear in the next newsletter as a supporter, along with your designation as a “Friend of Dress for Success.”







HOW:


1) Call DFSLA and obtain your packet;


2) Choose a theme for your get-together (Below are some ideas, or create one of your own!);


3) Invite your family/friends;


4) Have a fun-filled time;


5) Turn in collected money to DFSW.




Here are some ideas:



Game Party - Have several tables set up with either the same game at each table, or
different games at each table. Try rotating every half hour to mix up the social time.
The poker craze has hit Wichita - make it a poker night! Bunko groups could also adopt
DFSW for a meeting and have each member bring a donation.




Wine and Cheese Social - A little wine, some cheese and crackers, good music, and great friends mingling and socializing - low key and easy to plan.





Sports Night - Invite Family or friends over to watch a sporting event together, including
munchies - perfect for the family or even the man who wants to support women in need.





Afternoon Tea - Tea and cookies with friends. If you prefer, DFSW will send someone to
talk about our programs and how your guests are helping other women in the community
better themselves. Great for church groups!





Movie Night - Show a movie, pop some popcorn, serve some soda/drinks - popular
get-together movies might include Rocky Horror Picture Show, Caddyshack, Star Wars,
etc. This one is easy to plan and great for couples, families or guys!

5 Tips Home Edition: Here's how to make your home pay off for you at tax time.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Uncle Sam has some nice perks for homeowners. As April 15 approaches, start thinking about the ways you can make deductions for repairs, your mortgage interest or even take the famous home-office deduction.





In today's Five Tips we'll walk you through getting the most out of your home at tax time.




1. Deduct that mortgage interest





Deducting your mortgage interest is one of the biggest freebies Uncle Sam gives you. But keep in mind that the longer you live in your home, the less valuable your deduction will be. That's because most mortgages front-load the interest payments, meaning that as the years go by, your monthly payment will go more towards paying down the principle, and less towards interest on the loan.





At some point you may want to pay off your mortgage early, but read the fine print because you may get hit with prepayment penalty fees. But don't worry. At least you can deduct these penalties from your taxes.





2. Keep your receipts




If you have made improvements or repairs to your home, make sure you keep all of those receipts. When you sell your home, you can use these expenses to reduce the tax you pay on the profit. That profit is called a capital gain. The less profit you show, the less tax you'll have to pay.





So if you've installed a pool, replaced the siding or finished the basement, you can add the cost of those improvements to your base price...and reduce the taxable profit. Of course, you want to stash those receipts in a place that you can find again years later.





3. Relocation compensation




Whether you rent or buy, if you have to relocate because of your job, whether it's your first job, a new job or the same job, you may qualify for a moving deduction. And this can be a pretty big tax deduction, especially if you made a major cross-country move to take a new job.






You will qualify for this deduction if your new job is at least 50 miles away from where you live. You'll be able to deduct expenses like your moving van, moving services, the cost of moving your car or your pets, the use of storage facilities and any hotel rooms you had to stay in while making the move, says Donna LeValley of J.K. Lasser's "Your Income Tax 2006." Use IRS Form 3903 to calculate and claim this deduction.






4. Get damage deductions






If your home sustained damage because of a tornado, a hurricane or theft and you were not compensated by insurance, you may be able to get a deduction on your taxes.






There are some rules. The cost of un-reimbursed damage must be more than 10 percent of your adjusted gross income. And to make matters more complicated, you need to subtract $100 from that un-reimbursed damage before you do that calculation.






These rules we just outlined don't apply to victims of Hurricane Katrina. Anything that wasn't covered by insurance is fully deductible. If your area is declared a presidential disaster area, you have the right to amend last year's tax return and claim this year's loss. This will help you get a refund more quickly.






5. Deduct your home-office






If you're one of those folks who has the luxury of working at home in your PJ's, you may qualify for a home office deduction.





First, you have to use the office for work purposes only. You can't have little Johnny use it as a playroom during the evening hours. Of course, if you're self-employed, taking this deduction is a no-brainer. But if you work for an employer, it must have been your boss's choice to have you work from home, rather than your own preference.





To get a sense of what your deductions could be, get the square footage of your home and find out what percentage your home office takes up. Then deduct that percentage from your general household bills, like your electric bills, heating and repair bills. You would not be able to deduct these household costs under any other circumstances.

If you have recently sold your house at a significant profit, and if you have not been keeping up with the tax laws, you will be pleasantly surprised. If you are married, if you meet the legal requirements described below, you can exclude up to $500,000 of the profit you have made. If you are not married, or file a separate tax return, the exclusion is reduced down to $250,000 of profit.



For many years, there were two tax concepts which helped save homeowners from paying a lot of capital gains tax: the "roll-over" and the "once in a lifetime." However, the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997, signed by President Clinton on August 5, 1997, abolished both of these concepts. The roll-over and the once-in-a-lifetime exemption for homeowners over 55 years of age are real estate and tax history.



Although there are no restrictions on the number of times this exclusion can be used (as compared to the old "once-in-a-lifetime" approach) the law does contain two important conditions:



1. You must have owned and used the home as your principal residence for two out of five years before the house is sold. If you are married, so long as either spouse meets this requirement, the exclusion of gain applies. Marital status is determined on the date the house is sold. In the event of a divorce where one spouse is given ownership pursuant to a divorce decree or separation agreement, the use requirements will include any time that the former spouse actually owned the property before the transfer to the other spouse.


2. The exclusion is generally applicable once every two years. However, if you are unable to meet the two year ownership (and use) requirements because of a change in employment, health reasons or unforeseen circumstances (which have been defined by regulations promulgated by the IRS), then your exclusion is pro-rated. These pro-rations are complex, and have caused considerable confusion among lawyers, taxpayers and even the IRS.

It's as though a breath of fresh air has been blown right down the wide path of the new eco-friendly bikeway located in this sunny neighborhhood.





As you stroll along the path, you'll notice a colorful array of Burbank's finest denizens. Whether a couple walking a cute dog, a young man jogging, or teenagers riding by on their bikes. You may even spot kids rolling by - on roller skates or skate boards or a mom pushing her child in a stroller. Whatever you may see, it's a nice glimpse of this vibrant city through those who utilize the bikeway most, it's residents.




The Chandler Bikeway is a four-mile bikeway within the former Chandler Boulevard railroad right-of-way running from Mariposa Street to the Burbank/Los Angeles border at Clybourn Avenue. A bikeway and pedestrian path has been constructed where the railroad tracks used to be and the sides of the median have been landscaped with grass and trees.











Bikeways are a growing trend in many cities across the united states. The benefits of bikeways go beyond exercise and recreation. They can also be used as a means of transportation for those who rely on non-motorized transportation such as bikes or foot.

The City of Los Angeles is constructing the extension of the bikeway past Clybourn Avenue. Ultimately, the bikeway will connect to the North Hollywood Metro Red Line subway station.














The mile long bike path will be the final connecting link between the Burbank Transit Center to the east and Warner Center to the west along the former Southern Pacific Rail Line (along which sprouted the towns of Lankershim [now North Hollywood], Van Nuys, and other early communities of the San Fernando Valley). When completed in April, the bike path will afford cyclists a 17-mile ride through the San Fernando Valley from WarnerCenter to Burbank.
